The discovery of thirteen ancient papyrus books at Nag Hammadi in Egypt in 1945 shows that early Christianity was much more diverse than what the scholars had previously believed. The Gospels of Thomas, Philip and Mary Magdalene have as much the right to be called "authentic", even though they advocate a Gnostic view that the Church was quick to declare "heretical." The Vatican would have liked that the manuscripts from Nag Hammadi never saw the light of day, because they pose a serious competitor to the Church's version of what really is "true" about Jesus and early Christianity.
