America was not named after the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci on purpose. This myth was created by the German publisher Martin Waldseemüller, when his desk in a stressful situation before a major release flowed over with old descriptions of a continent far west in the ocean - which was called La Merica or L'America - and a report that Vespucci had written about his voyages to the same continent. Thus, the German happened to confuse the Italian's first name with America.
