The official main objective of Giovanni da Verrazano's expedition to America was to find a passage through the continent that led further west to India. But in reality, he had tricked King François of France into financing an attempt to rediscover Earl Henry of the Orkneys' colonies, which were collectively known as Arcadia. When the Italian captain saw the Tower of Newport, he was convinced that he had found exactly what he was looking for. His belief in an early European presence in America was also boosted by the fact that many of the natives didn't look much "Indian" and some of them could actually communicate in English. Henry's expedition and the colonization of America must have affected the American coastal tribes' culture to a much greater extent than what the researchers so far have been aware of.
