Jesus' brother James was a much more important figure in Christianity's beginning than what the first Christian historians liked to admit, but his important role has been systematically minimized and dimmed, since he has constituted an embarrassing element to Christianity, as he asserted realistic, "non-divine" doctrines about his brother Jesus, which he of course presented as "a normal human being". While the Church proclaimed Mary as "an eternal virgin", James was "demoted" to "Jesus' half-brother", "Jesus' step-brother" or "Jesus' cousin".
