When Jesus, according to Christian tradition, resurrected Lazarus, he in reality annulled the excommunication of Simon Zealotes, who used "Lazarus" as a religious title and had been sentenced to "a spiritual death". Once again, Jesus challenged the conservative view, since the revocation of "spiritual death sentences" so far had only been carried out by men that belonged to the Levi Tribe.
