When Jesus "walked on water", he just moved across a causeway that was slightly submerged. An internal joke among the fisher priests' helpers that stood on the end of the pier and saw the priests coming towards them as if they walked on the water's surface has gone over in the Christian tradition as if a miracle really happened. But this time, the "miracle" concerned something completely different. By assuming a role that really only the priests had the authority to perform, Jesus wanted to show that everyone in principle could hold the leading priestly positions, regardless of whether they were born into the Levi Tribe or not.
