Joseph, Mary and Jesus never fled to the real Egypt. Instead, they stayed in a cave called "Egypt", because the Egyptian Therapeuts resided there under the leadership of Joseph's uncle Thaddeus. Our time calculation, which erroneously is called "Anno Domini" in an attempt to be linked to the birth of Jesus, has, however, nothing to do with this person or his birth. When the last "generation" of forty years was eliminated from the Essenes' calendar, because King Herod had not fulfilled certain prophecies and thus the expectations that had been placed upon him, the end of the year that I call "-1" was chosen as the starting point for the next generation. Normally, one would start a new generation by counting the years from 1 every forty years, but the religious movement that eventually evolved into Christianity now continued the same time calculation. Later, one wrongly assumed that Jesus had been born in the year -1 and the Christian time calculation was eventually taken over by the Romans.
