Both his name and the circumstances occurring right after he was born suggest that Moses must have been a prominent member of the Egyptian royal house. The Bible authors desperately try to provide a Hebrew background for him, but without success. In the real world, an Egyptian prince could order an overseer to be executed on the spot if he so decided, without being held responsible and be punished for such an action. Even this episode was inserted into the narration to make Moses appear as an Israelite.
