Contrary to what both the Bible and other sources falsely claim, it was only at some point during the Thirteenth Dynasty that some of the Egyptian kings adopted the title pharaoh, which comes from perĂ¡ (Old Egyptian "The Great House"). This term had earlier referred to physical buildings, but it was now associated with those branches of the royal family that could prove descent from the Twelfth Dynasty and thus claim to be "the rightful rulers of Egypt". One cannot therefore call an Egyptian king "pharaoh" before the Thirteenth Dynasty.
