Like hell, purgatory was developed by the Catholic Church to control people's faith. But fortunately, not everyone accepted this man-made concept and they protested strongly against wealthy individuals being allowed to buy themselves free from it. This view, which was first and foremost organized by Martin Luther, John Calvin and Huldrych Zwingli, was eventually shared by so many that they broke with the Pope's Church and formed their own religious communities.
