According to the myth, because Mac operating systems are built on a secure Unix foundation and because Macs comprise such a relatively small percentage of PCs, they are not only immune to viruses, but hackers won't even bother. However, after having conducted a study of 100,000 of its users, anti-virus software-maker Sophos concluded that one in every five Macs carry some sort of malware; these Macs aren't infected per se, but they carry malware in much of the same way humans carry dormant viruses such as chicken pox. Apple also has had continuing problems dealing with a security hole in Mac OS X opened by Java, exposed by last year's attack by the Flashback Trojan infestation.
