Freedom of religion in Pakistan is guaranteed by the Constitution for individuals of various religions and religious sects. But sometimes, countries don't pay much attention to their laws for practical purposes and according to a myth, Pakistan is a country without religious freedom. However, a recent Pew Research Center survey among 38 countries reveals that Pakistanis rank higher than the global median for freedom to choose and practice their religion, while the country ranks low in other categories, including supporting gender equality, believing in freedom of expression, a free media and Internet. The Global Attitudes Survey was conducted in the UK, America, France, middle-eastern countries, Turkey, Pakistan, India, South East Asian countries, north and west-African countries; and Latin America. African and Asian countries typically express less support for equal rights and freedoms than European, Latin American, and (some) middle-eastern countries. Pakistan almost always fell on the tail end of all those statistics. But with a global median of 74pc for people to freely practice their religion, Pakistan is higher than the median, at 84pc. That the myth has been taken seriously and been believed by the upper echelon is evident from the following quote:
